Costa Farms California

Stemming three generations, the Costa family has been farming in the Salinas Valley of California for over 55 years. Anthony Costa moved from Wakefield, MA to Los Banos, CA in 1939, when he was 11 years old. In 1956, Anthony started Costa Farms growing sugar beets. In the late 1950s, Mr. Costa expanded the business, and began farming leaf lettuce as well as green onions. Anthony and his wife Elsie were always dedicated to the family business. Their children, Mike Costa, David Costa and Joanne (Costa) Moline, as well as grandchildren Colby Rubbo and Peter Dossche carry on the family farming tradition today.
For over twenty five years, Costa Farms and Mann Packing Co., Inc. have partnered to grow thirty-five different field commodities including broccoli, cauliflower, multiple lettuce varieties, celery, bok choy, cabbage, kale, parsley, cilantro and the one and only, Broccolini®.
In 2005, Costa Farms revolutionized lettuce harvesting, with the invention and manufacturing of a whole leaf lettuce machine. An integral step in eliminating waste, the machine mechanically de-leafs an entire head of leaf lettuce into individual leaves. Always looking towards the future, in 2009, Costa Farms invented and manufactured a broccoli floret machine that mechanically takes the harvested broccoli crowns, and cuts them into individual florets.
Today, Costa Farms employs more than seventy people. Their staff is dedicated to quality, innovation and food safety.
Costa Farms is a signatory in good standing of both the California and Arizona Leafy Green Marketing Agreement (LGMA).
