FEBRUARY 2009: FEBRUARY IS THE MONTH WE CELEBRATE "THINGS OF THE HEART"

February is the month we celebrate "Things of the Heart". Not only are we thinking of Valentines Day, but it is the month that the
American Heart Association calls attention to their campaign, "Go Red for Women". The focus this month is on food, nutrition, stress,
diet and exercise for the heart.

American Heart Association Promotes "Go Red For Women"
According to the National Center for Health Statistics, heart disease is the number one cause of death in the United States. The American
Heart Association states 90% of primary care doctors are not aware that heart disease kills more women than men each year, and is often initially
misdiagnosed in women. There is pending legislation in congress called the 'Heart for Women Act". This act is aimed at changing this mentality by
raising awareness among women and their doctors, providing gender specific information on life saving drugs and medical devises, and improving
screening for low income women. This new awareness will hopefully result in the same preventative measures taken for men, and will be widely
used in women's healthcare.
Heart disease in both men and women can be reduced by 80% if the signs are recognized early enough and risk factors are controlled. A healthy
diet and lifestyle are the best weapons to fight heart disease. Things to include in your diet are vegetables and fruits high in vitamins,
minerals and fiber, but low in calories. Broccoli, Broccolini®, cauliflower, cabbage and carrots are only a few...

Valentine's Day
The tradition of celebrating love on Valentine's Day has been around for centuries. During the 19th century the tradition of hand written
love notes began to give way to mass produced greeting cards. So whether you send a hand made card, or a purchased greeting card, let
someone know they are thought of fondly from your heart. There are many ways to show you care for someone in this tough economy, without
spending money. This year try and give the gift of your time. A walk on the beach, an afternoon with no other distractions, an evening
with the phone turned off. Make a special dinner at home for your partner or your entire family. See the link below for some of those
special stay at home dinners and enjoy!

Tips On Saving Money At The Grocery Store
In today's world we are all trying to save money any way we can. It is important to save at the grocery store, without giving up the foods we need
to stay healthy. By following a few of these tips you can save money and still maintain a healthy diet that includes fresh vegetables and fruit.
- Create a food budget and stick to it.
- Sit down each week and plan your menus for the next 7 days. Include healthy items for each of your three daily meals. This will keep
you from having to make multiple trips to the grocery store. It is a fact people that stop at the store 3-6 times a week or on the way
home each night spend 30-40% more on food than those that shop once a week. Who can resist all of the extra items you didn't know you
needed until you stopped at the store on the way home? And never shop when you are hungry! You will spend an extra 15-30% on items
that just "look good".
- Call or email your favorite manufacturer and request discount coupons (including Mann's!).
- Put all of your items on a shopping list, and stick to the list, no extras or impulse buying.

Stress Relief In Your Daily Life
Stress is a common factor in all of our lives. We all have worries about work, family and the economy. Trying to juggle everything and
stay healthy is a challenge. Most of us are moving through life so fast it is difficult to take a restful moment for ourselves with so
many duties and obligations. But finding a small amount of time each day to relax is essential for a healthy heart and mind.
Finding a balance between work and personal life is important. Without this balance, both areas suffer. In order to control the balance
between the two you must take a step back and evaluate each one. We live in a global world where it is not always possible to turn work
off after an eight-hour day. Many people put in 40-60 hours a week and still have family to attend to afterwards.

Consumer Questions & Answers
We are always happy to answer your questions. Just send us an email and we will answer them personally, and post the most frequently asked
questions in the newsletter.
Question #1: Our favorite Mann's veggies used to be available in 12oz and 16oz sizes. Now our local market only carries the 12oz. but at
the 16oz. price. Why did Mann change the size?
Answer #1: Our products are still available in the 16oz. package. Due to the present economy many retailers have opted out of the larger
package. It is still available, so ask your store manager to carry it again.
Question #2: Can I freeze your packaged vegetables?
Answer #2: Fresh veggies must be blanched before freezing or they will be mushy and taste bad when thawed out. Go to
Blanching Instructions for detailed information.
February is definitely the month we focus on the heart. Don't forget to think "heart healthy" the other twelve months of the year.
Eat right, exercise daily and do something for yourself each day to relieve life's stresses.
Sincerely,
Susan Cameron
