JANUARY 2009: HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM MANN PACKING!

Happy Healthy New Year to All!
It's 2009 and time for a fresh healthy start for our bodies and our minds! Time to clear the cobwebs out of the gray matter and commit to improving our minds and our bodies. Turn off the television and turn on some good music. And while the music is playing, get up and dance (great exercise at home). Take a walk, read a book, volunteer at a local community organization. All of these things are great mood boosters. Be sure you add 4 servings of fresh vegetables in addition to your servings of fruit with your daily meals. You will feel better and benefit from shedding some of those holiday pounds we are all carrying around.

Cholesterol And The Foods We Eat
Cholesterol is a waxy fat present in our bodies and manufactured by our liver. Although it is vital in itself for survival, too much carried through the bloodstream can cause a build up of plaque in the arteries. If this condition exists and is not corrected, the buildup can lead to atherosclerosis, heart disease and even heart attacks.

There are many causes for high cholesterol including genetic makeup, poor diet and lack of exercise. Did you know that an increase in your bodies can also be caused by just getting older? Men and women over 50 are at risk, even if there levels have been normal up to that time. Yearly screening with your doctor is essential to check your levels of cholesterol and to keep them under control. A level of 200 or less is recommended for total cholesterol, but your doctor will verify for your age and weight what your levels should be.

If you have high cholesterol, a change in diet can help reduce your levels. Remember only foods that are animal based contain cholesterol. You will want to cut back on processed meats, sausages, limit red meat intake, shellfish (very high in cholesterol), items high in sodium (table salt, canned soups & sauces and frozen meals).

Tips For January
Take small steps towards renewing a better diet and set reasonable goals for yourself. Work a half hour of exercise into your daily routine. Just running or walking up and down the stairs for 30 minutes will improve your overall health. This is a practical option if it is too cold to walk or run outside.

Winter is also hockey season and the father of four is very involved with youth athletics, he coaches and attends as many of kids' games as possible. "Hockey is an eight-month season and then we have baseball," Rob said.
